God has come close to his people again. After our fall into sin, God repeatedly invited individuals back into his presence. Eventually, though, he did it with an entire group of people, the Israelites. He called them into his presence at Mt. Sinai. Then he sent his presence with them in the Tabernacle. After that, he permanently established his presence with them in the Promised Land. But now God has come among us in a new way. He’s “tabernacled” with us and “made his dwelling” among us not at a mountain, not in a tent, and not even in a temple, but as one of us, in our own flesh, in the person of his Son, Jesus Christ. Immanuel, “God with us,” to be sure!
