“Blessed are the pure in heart…” Uh-huh. We’ve heard that one before. But listen to Eugene Peterson’s paraphrase of it in The Message. “You’re blessed when you get your inside world – your mind and heart – put right. Then you can see God in the outside world.” To put it bluntly, this Beatitude gets right to the heart of the matter. What are our motives? Are we clean on the inside? Why do we pray? Why do we worship? Why do we study the Word? Helen Keller was asked once if it was “terrible to be blind.” She answered, “Better to be blind and see with your heart, than to have two good eyes and see nothing.” That is what this Beatitude is all about – seeing God. Do you have 20/20 spiritual vision?
