Happy Medium

Psalm 37:1-11; Matthew 5:5

Meekness may be admirable but it has only rarely been enviable. The meek do not get into much trouble, but that is precisely because we tend to think they do not get into much of anything. They stand off a bit and blink a lot and look for something on which to dry their sweaty palms. It may come as a surprise, then, to know that Moses was meek, more so “than anyone else on the face of the earth” (Nu. 12:3). And it will certainly jolt you to know that Aristotle defined meekness as the happy medium between too much anger and too little. If the word “meek” is hard to understand, the reward of the meek is also. Let’s listen carefully to what God says about living ‘medium.’
