Happy Tears

Psalm 119:129-136, Matthew 5:4

This Beatitude sounds like:  “Happy are the sad.”  And at first glance that seems to make no sense.  But that first glance must look deeper.  This sadness is not just disappointment but the deepest and most profound kind of grief.  This is the mourning of those who “understand that they are spiritual beggars” without hope and without help from anyone else.  And they are happy because they have received a grace that is greater than all their sin.  There is no greater grief than guilt and no greater consolation than grace.  And that means that there is no greater joy than to see the depth of your sin for God will surely comfort that sadness with His great forgiveness.
