Jonah goes from preacher to pouter. Sitting outside Nineveh, he hopes for its destruction. Not exactly the loving posture God’s people are supposed to embody towards non-believers. What about us? What’s our posture towards unbelievers? Do we love them? Or do we, like Jonah, play the part of “elder sons”?
If you’re looking to go deeper into this sermon series, two resources I’ve found helpful in understanding Jonah are Tim Keller’s The Prodigal Prophet and Sinclair Ferguson’s Man Overboard! I would also recommend Tim Keller’s 2006 lecture on evangelism from the Desiring God conference. It’s not directly about Jonah, but Keller uses the book as a window into what evangelism looks like today.
